The legend of Salaca castle mound

It’s impossible to say how old Salacgrīva really is. As the most ancient place is considered the castle mound on the right bank of the Salaca river.

In the ancient times the castle mound was conquered by the Liv pirate Trommel who later married the daughter of the chieftain (legends on Trommel remain also in Kurzeme coast). The pirates had also settled in the Liepupe castle mound, which is considered to be the castle mound that is located closest to the sea (2,5 km). The oldest people of Salacgrīva still claim that there is a 1,5 km long underground tunnel which starts at the castle mound and leads to Branguļmežs that was used by the pirates.

At the beginning of the 20th century spring an ancient gun, other weapons and metal money were washed away from the castle.  They were not taken to museums. The castle stones were used to build the church yard.
